Surajji (the cook) has gone home to visit with his family and friends. So, we now have to fend for ourselves. Bijitji and I ventured out one night to buy vegetables and groceries in the market close to our guesthouse. As we paid, the shop keeper asked, “Suraj nahi hai?” “ Suraj isn’t around?” I was startled that he knew exactly who we were, where we lived and the fact that our cook must’ve been missing since we are out buying groceries! It was an essential reminder of how much others know about me, how little I know about them and what a little community I’m now a part of.
